What’s so bad about the 3VZ-FE?

It has the power of a 4-cylinder, the gas mileage of a big block, and the reliability of Subaru. I’d still rather have one than a 22RE, but I’d rather have a lot of things over a 22RE, like an EJ .

The 3.0 isn’t as bad behind the 5-speed. I still wouldn’t want it , but I wouldn’t want a 3.4 in something that size either.

Tldr, poor performance, fuel economy, and reliability especially compared to the 22RE. Known for blowing head gaskets as an inevitibility rather than a probability. Replaced by the much robust 3.4 5VZ-FE in 1995.

The 2.7 on these on the lighter RWD single cabs ain’t bad. Also timing chain and no belt.

I massively disagree with the 22RE bit, but otherwise correct. The 22RE is the most overrated engine to ever be overrated. It shouldn’t have enough power to hurt itself, yet it pops gaskets as much as the 3VZE and has timing issues that the 3VZE doesn’t have(as long as you change the belt *changed belt in 2012...*). It’s just substantially cheaper to fix. If it had a GM stamp, it would be remembered worse than the Iron Duke.

That’s fair, I just see a lot of disappoint from people who swap in the 3.4 in the place of the 3.0, as i t’s still dirt slow and gets horrific mileage.

You don't have to twist my arm, I'm the annoying hipster who prefers the 20R over the 22RE. 20R doesn't have timing guide issues that lead to the chain eating the water pump. It's also more appropriate for the application of actual truck stuffs.

Basically, what I’m saying is if you want to overpay for a truck that really actually won’t break, get 1999-2006 Silverado/Sierra with a 4.8 and a 5 speed.

I’m a firm believer that the 22RE rides on the legendary reliability of the non-E R-series.

I had a 22R in my first Toyota, which had over 296 k miles when I bought it. Motor was worn out (did a compression test when I bought it) but I drove it every day for 5 years. Got lucky with that one. The 22RE in my Celica was... finicky, even with substantially less miles. I like popping the hood and adjusting mixture screws on the carburetor. When the Celica gave me fits it was like, uhhh, be less sad, Mr. ECU.

What was your first Toyota?

Only pickups that will fit lengthwise are: T100, Tacoma, Ranger, S10. Not even a first gen tundra fits without some extreme measures. 4runner and Land Cruiser would fit.

It was this 1989 pickup, base model. I put on the 4x4 grille and new tires and drove it around.
